Funny, I’ve been blogging on a professional level (as a librarian) for over a year and a half through my school library web site. Just little notes to my students, staff and parents to keep them updated on what is going on in the library. You’d be surprised about all the stuff that happens in the school library!
So why have I decided to blog on a more personal level? I thought it would be a fine idea to document my struggles to write and publish a novel for children.
I had written professionally for over a decade as an advertising copywriter, but my main goal in life is to write fiction. I don’t expect to be the next J.K. Rowling, but I sure do want to get published.
So, here I am pretty much at the beginning of my endeavours, although I really feel I’ve been working toward this from the moment I was first able to pick up a chubby pencil and write.
What exactly am I working on? A historical fiction for young readers based on my in-laws’ experiences as children during the Second World War. The story alternates between the girl’s experiences and the boy’s experiences, and documents their harrowing journey from the safety of their homes to imprisonment in a strange land and eventual freedom. It’s a tribute to two amazing people and their incredible strength of spirit.
My hope is to get the bulk of the story written over the summer holidays, and then continue to document my efforts to get it published. I know it’s going to be a bumpy ride, but I’m just glad the key is finally in the ignition!
